Strikeforce was a major American mixed martial arts (MMA) and kickboxing promotion based in San Jose, California, founded in 1985 by Scott Coker. Originally focused on kickboxing, it transitioned into MMA in 2006, becoming the first promotion to host a state-regulated MMA event in California and quickly growing into one of the top global MMA organizations. At its peak, Strikeforce was widely seen as the main competitor to the UFC, featuring elite fighters and broadcasting events on major networks like CBS and Showtime.
Strikeforce was known for its stacked rosters, Grand Prix tournaments, and early support of women’s MMA, helping launch stars like Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg. In 2011, the promotion was acquired by Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, and after a gradual integration of its fighters, it officially ceased operations in 2013. Despite its relatively short MMA run, Strikeforce left a lasting impact on the sport and played a key role in shaping the modern MMA landscape.
